Can Gum Disease Make Osteoporosis Worse?

Most people think of gum disease as a problem that only affects the mouth. But new research suggests it may have a much bigger impact, especially for people living with osteoporosis.

A recent study found that chronic gum disease, also known as periodontitis, may speed up bone loss throughout the body by disrupting the healthy bacteria in the digestive system. While this research was performed in animals, it adds to growing evidence that your oral health and overall health are closely connected.

What Is Periodontitis?

Periodontitis is an advanced form of gum disease caused by harmful bacteria around the teeth. As the infection progresses, the gums become inflamed and begin to pull away from the teeth. Over time, the disease can damage the bone that supports your teeth, eventually leading to lose teeth or tooth loss if left untreated.

Many people don't realize they have periodontitis because it often develops slowly. Bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, swollen gums, or teeth that feel loose can all be warning signs.

How Does This Affect the Rest of the Body?

Researchers have known for years that gum disease causes bone loss in the jaw. This new study suggests the effects may not stop there.

Scientists found that inflammation from gum disease may change the balance of healthy bacteria in the gut, known as the gut microbiome. These bacteria help regulate many important body functions, including calcium absorption, immune function, and the process of building and maintaining healthy bones.

When the gut microbiome becomes unhealthy, the protective lining of the intestines may become weaker, allowing more inflammation to spread throughout the body. Chronic inflammation is already known to contribute to many health problems, including osteoporosis.

In other words, unhealthy gums may trigger changes that make it harder for the body to maintain strong bones.

Why This Matters for People with Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and more fragile, increasing the risk of fractures. The new research suggests that people with osteoporosis who also have untreated gum disease may be at an even greater risk for continued bone loss and broken bones.

Researchers also believe the relationship goes both ways. Osteoporosis may make it easier for bone loss to occur around the teeth, while gum disease may increase inflammation that further weakens bones elsewhere in the body. Together, the two conditions may amplify each other's effects.

What Can You Do?

While more research is needed, one message is already clear: taking care of your gums is an important part of taking care of your overall health.

Simple steps can make a big difference:

  • Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste.

  • Clean between your teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes.

  • Schedule regular dental checkups and professional cleanings.

  • Seek treatment if you notice bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, or loose teeth.

  • If you have osteoporosis, more frequent cleanings or laser gum therapy may help improve your oral health.
