Sedation Dentistry in Phoenix, AZ — Relax Through Any Procedure

We've been helping anxious patients get the dental care they need, without fear, since 2019.

Dr. Jennifer Ebner, sedation dentist at Innovative Dentistry Biltmore, Phoenix, AZ — calm, welcoming dental office

Dr. Jennifer Ebner at Innovative Dentistry Biltmore in Phoenix, AZ has offered sedation dentistry since 2001, providing three levels of sedation to patients of all ages: nitrous oxide (laughing gas) for mild anxiety, oral conscious sedation (pill sedation) for moderate anxiety, and deep IV sedation administered by a residency-trained physician anesthesiologist using OR-level equipment for patients with severe dental phobia, oral PTSD, extensive treatment needs, gag reflex challenges, or special needs. IV sedation allows patients to have no memory of their dental procedure and can enable complete full mouth reconstruction in a single appointment. Dr. Ebner's sedation dentistry practice specifically serves patients who have avoided dental care for years or decades due to fear, trauma, or anxiety.

Is dental anxiety keeping you from the care you need?

You are not alone. Studies show that between 9% and 20% of Americans avoid the dentist entirely because of fear or anxiety. Some patients haven't been in for years. Some haven't been in for decades. Some have vivid memories of painful experiences that never left them. Some carry a fear they can't entirely explain — but it's real, and it shows up the moment they think about making an appointment.

We see you. We have been treating patients like you since 2001. We don't judge. We don't rush. We don't minimize what you're feeling. And we have real, clinical solutions — three levels of sedation — designed to match exactly how much help you need.

Dr. Ebner and her team have completed full mouth reconstructions, multiple extractions, and years of overdue care for patients who had fully convinced themselves that they couldn't do it. They did it. With the right level of sedation and a team that genuinely cares, you can too.

Three levels of sedation — matched to your comfort level.

😮‍💨 Nitrous Oxide — Laughing Gas, Mild, fast-acting, wears off quickly

Mild sedation

Nitrous oxide is inhaled through a small, comfortable nose mask and takes effect within minutes. You'll feel a pleasant sense of warmth and relaxation, sounds become softer, the chair feels more comfortable, and the edge comes completely off. You remain awake, aware, and able to communicate throughout your appointment. When treatment ends, the gas is cleared from your system in minutes and you can drive yourself home.

Nitrous oxide is ideal for patients with mild to moderate dental anxiety who want to take the edge off without significant sedation. It's also excellent for children and for shorter procedures.

Good for: Mild dental anxiety, Routine cleanings, Fillings & bonding, First-time sedation patients, Short procedures

💊 Oral Conscious Sedation — Pill Sedation Moderate relaxation, you may drowse or sleep

Moderate sedation

Oral sedation is a prescription pill taken about an hour before your appointment. By the time you arrive, you'll feel deeply relaxed, many patients drowse through the procedure and remember very little of it afterward. You remain conscious and can respond to questions, but most patients describe feeling like they slept through their appointment. You will need a driver to take you home.

Oral sedation is ideal for patients with moderate to significant anxiety, a strong gag reflex, sensitivity to dental sounds or smells, or multiple procedures scheduled in one visit.

Good for: Moderate-to-significant anxiety, Strong gag reflex, Multiple procedures, Needle phobia, Sound & smell sensitivity, Lengthy appointments

🏥 IV Sedation — Physician Anesthesiologist, Deep sedation — no memory, complete comfort

Deep sedation

Our IV sedation service is genuinely extraordinary, and rare in a general dental practice. We bring in a residency-trained physician anesthesiologist (MD) who sets up an OR-level anesthesia machine and emergency equipment directly in our dental office. Under IV sedation, you are in a deep, controlled sleep. You feel nothing. You hear nothing. You will have no memory of the procedure at all. When you wake up, it's done.

Why a physician anesthesiologist matters: Many dental offices offering "IV sedation" use a dentist with sedation training — not a medical doctor anesthesiologist. Dr. Ebner's anesthesiologist is residency-trained, MD-credentialed, and brings the same level of monitoring and emergency preparedness used in hospital operating rooms. This is the highest standard of safety available in an outpatient dental setting.

IV sedation is particularly well-suited for patients with severe dental phobia or PTSD, patients who have not been to the dentist in many years or decades, patients with extensive treatment needs who want to complete everything in one visit, patients who cannot keep their mouth open for extended periods, and patients with special needs or medical conditions that make standard dental care difficult.

Ideal for: Severe dental phobia or PTSD, Decades without dental care, Full mouth reconstruction, Multiple extractions, Implant surgery, Cannot open mouth long, Zero memory desired

Who is sedation dentistry right for?

If any of the following sound familiar, sedation dentistry was designed for you:

You have dental anxiety or phobia

Fear of the dentist is one of the most common anxieties in adults. It doesn't make you weak, it makes you human. Sedation removes the fear completely.

You've experienced dental trauma

Past painful experiences, childhood dental trauma, or abuse that makes hands near your face feel intolerable, all of these are valid and treatable with the right level of sedation.

You haven't been to a dentist in years

Embarrassment, anxiety, or avoidance has kept you away. We see this every week. There is no judgment here, only a plan to get you caught up comfortably.

You have a strong gag reflex

A sensitive gag reflex can make routine dental care genuinely uncomfortable. Sedation significantly reduces the reflex and makes procedures like impressions and X-rays easy.

You need a lot of work done

Why spread extensive treatment over 10 appointments when IV sedation lets us complete it safely in one or two? Less time, less stress, faster results.

You have special needs or medical conditions

Patients with conditions that make standard dental cooperation difficult, whether neurological, physical, or psychological, benefit enormously from our anesthesiologist-level sedation options.

★★★★★ patient reviews

"People who have suffered from events of trauma or abuse often have a great aversion to hands or tools in their mouths. With sedation, she was able to have a full mouth reconstruction without the stress, discomfort of shots, drills, the noises, and the personal aversion to hands in her mouth that terrified her."

Frequently asked questions about sedation dentistry

Is sedation dentistry safe?

Yes, when administered by qualified professionals with appropriate monitoring and emergency equipment. Our nitrous oxide and oral sedation protocols have been used safely in dental offices for decades. Our IV sedation is uniquely safe because it is administered by a residency-trained physician anesthesiologist (MD) using OR-level monitoring equipment, the same standard used in hospital operating rooms. This is considerably safer than IV sedation administered by a dentist alone.

Will I be completely unconscious under IV sedation?

IV sedation produces a state of deep relaxation or light sleep, you are not under general anesthesia, but most patients have no memory of the procedure at all. You are still able to breathe on your own and respond to basic instructions, but you will feel nothing and typically remember nothing. For most anxious patients, this is the ideal outcome.

How is your IV sedation different from what other dentists offer?

Most dental offices that offer IV sedation have a dentist who has completed a sedation certification course administering the IV. At Innovative Dentistry Biltmore, we bring in a residency-trained physician anesthesiologist, a medical doctor with years of specialty training in anesthesia, who manages your sedation while Dr. Ebner focuses entirely on your dental treatment. This separation of roles and the MD-level credentials of our anesthesiologist is rare in a general dental practice and represents a meaningfully higher standard of safety.

Can I get all my dental work done in one sedation appointment?

In many cases, yes. IV sedation allows us to safely perform extensive treatment, multiple extractions, fillings, crowns, implant placement, in a single appointment. For patients who have been avoiding the dentist for years, this can mean completing years of overdue care in one comfortable visit. Dr. Ebner will develop a treatment plan and let you know how many appointments are needed based on your specific needs.

Do I need someone to drive me home after sedation?

For nitrous oxide: no, it clears your system within minutes and you can drive yourself. For oral sedation and IV sedation: yes, you will need a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for several hours after your appointment.

I'm embarrassed about the state of my teeth. Will anyone judge me?

Never. Dr. Ebner and her team have cared for patients who haven't seen a dentist in 20 years, patients with severe decay, patients with dental trauma, and patients who were in tears before their first appointment. Every single one of them was treated with complete kindness and zero judgment. The state of your teeth is less important to us than the fact that you finally reached out.

How much does sedation dentistry cost?

Nitrous oxide is typically a small add-on fee per appointment. Oral sedation involves a prescription cost. IV sedation with the physician anesthesiologist involves an additional fee for the anesthesiologist's time and equipment. Our team will provide a complete cost estimate before your appointment. Many patients find that completing extensive treatment in fewer sedation appointments is more cost-effective overall than spreading treatment over many standard visits.
