Three integrated approaches, one philosophy
Dr. Ebner's practice integrates three overlapping philosophies that together form a complete, whole-body approach to dental care:
🌿 Biological Dentistry
Focuses on using only biocompatible, non-toxic materials, metal-free, mercury-free, BPA-free, fluoride-free, and recognizes that dental materials enter the body and affect systemic health. Biological dentistry avoids materials known to cause inflammation, immune response, or toxicity.
⚙️ Functional Dentistry
Addresses how your teeth, bite, jaw joints, muscles, and airway work together as a system. Without functional health as the foundation, cosmetic work can fail, gum disease can worsen, and surgical outcomes may not last. Functional dentistry ensures all other dental work is built on a sound, comfortable, lasting foundation.
🍃 Holistic Dentistry
Treats the patient as a whole person, not just a set of teeth. Holistic dentistry recognizes links between oral health and systemic conditions including heart disease, diabetes, and hormonal health. It incorporates naturopathic and allopathic perspectives to give patients complete information for their healthcare decisions.
🔄 Regenerative Dentistry
Uses the body's own healing mechanisms to recover from dental disease, surgery, and periodontal treatment. Techniques include PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin), bone grafting with growth factors, and red light photobiomodulation therapy, minimizing synthetic chemicals and steroids.
The mouth-body connection, why your dental health affects your whole life
Both allopathic (conventional) and naturopathic medicine now agree: many systemic diseases present with symptoms in the oral cavity. By identifying and addressing those oral signs, Dr. Ebner can provide more complete treatment and support co-management with your other healthcare providers.
❤️ Cardiovascular Disease
Periodontal bacteria have been directly linked to atherosclerosis and increased cardiovascular risk. MyPerioPath® DNA testing identifies these pathogens specifically.
🧠 Stroke
Specific oral bacteria (P. gingivalis, T. denticola) detected by MyPerioPath® are associated with elevated stroke risk, enabling early intervention.
😴 Sleep Apnea
Airway evaluation is part of Dr. Ebner's functional dentistry assessment. Oral appliance therapy for sleep apnea and snoring is available as a biological alternative to CPAP.
🩸 Diabetes
Gum disease makes blood sugar harder to control, and diabetes makes gum disease worse. Treating periodontal disease can measurably improve HbA1c levels.
🤰 Pregnancy
Active periodontal disease during pregnancy is linked to preterm birth and low birth weight. Periodontal therapy during pregnancy is safe and recommended.
🦠 Systemic Inflammation
Chronic periodontal infection is a driver of systemic inflammation, a root cause of many chronic diseases. Treating the mouth reduces the inflammatory burden on the whole body.
Safe mercury amalgam removal, SMART Protocol
One of the most common reasons patients seek out a biological dentist is concern about existing silver amalgam (mercury) fillings. Mercury is a known neurotoxin, and while the FDA has updated its guidance on amalgam fillings, recommending avoidance for high-risk groups including pregnant women, children under 6, and people with kidney impairment, many patients with existing fillings want them safely removed.
What is the SMART Protocol?
The Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART) is a set of evidence-based protective measures developed to minimize mercury vapor exposure during amalgam removal. Dr. Ebner's SMART protocol includes: rubber dam isolation, high-volume evacuation, sectioning the filling into chunks (rather than grinding), supplemental oxygen (if desired by the patient), immediate removal of mercury waste. This is the highest standard of safe amalgam removal available in a dental office. Our office utilizes the Solmetex Amalgam Recovery and Recycling Unit to prevent environmental contamination by dental mercury waste and protect our public water supply.
Dr. Ebner also uses only metal-free, mercury-free materials for all restorations placed at Innovative Dentistry Biltmore, composite resin, ceramic, and zirconia, so no new amalgam is ever introduced.
Biological dentistry technology at Innovative Dentistry Biltmore
Dr. Ebner has invested in diagnostic and therapeutic technologies that represent alternatives to conventional dental tools, offering greater precision, less invasive, and support for the body's own healing processes.
Laser & Light Therapies
Active service
Soft-Tissue Laser Periodontal Therapy (LAPT) Laser light decontaminates deep periodontal pockets inaccessible to standard cleaning — dramatically stabilizing gum disease and initiating natural healing.
Active service
Red Light Therapy (Photobiomodulation): Specific wavelengths stimulate cellular healing, reduce inflammation, and accelerate recovery after extractions, implants, and periodontal surgery.
Active service
Soft Tissue Laser for Surgery: Controls bleeding as it cuts, reducing post-op pain and swelling. Used for gum contouring, crown lengthening, periodontal cleaning, and cold sore treatment.
Active service
Transillumination Cavity Detection: Light reacts differently with healthy vs. diseased tissue, identifying cracks, decay, and oral cancer non-invasively, sometimes reducing the need for X-rays.
Regenerative & Biological Therapies
Active service
Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) & PRP: Your own blood's growth factors concentrate healing platelets at surgical sites, accelerating recovery from implants, extractions, and bone grafting without synthetic additives.
Active service
Bone Grafting After Extraction: Prevents cavitation formation (weak, irregular jaw bone areas) by replacing extracted tooth sockets with bone graft material immediately after removal.
Active service
Hydrogen Peroxide Periodontal Therapy: Dilute H2O2 gel delivered via custom tray kills anaerobic periodontal bacteria, freshens breath, and lightens teeth — worn 5–15 minutes daily during active disease.
Active service
BioActive Cavity Liner Paste: Inflammation from deep cavities can be reduced when applied under fillings or crowns. When the nerve is able to heal, the chance of needing root canal therapy decreases.
Advanced Diagnostics
Active service
Dental Cone Beam CT (CBCT) 3D Imaging: 3D images of skull, airway, sinus, teeth, and jaws with minimal radiation, providing dramatically more diagnostic information than traditional 2D X-rays.
Active service
Intra-Oral Cameras: Wand-like cameras capture close-up photos and video of your mouth, so you can see exactly what Dr. Ebner sees and fully understand your oral condition.
Active service
Ultra Low-Dose Digital X-Rays: Electronic sensors require far less radiation than traditional film, no chemical processing, instant results, and safer for patients of all ages.
Active service
MyPerioPath® DNA Pathogen Testing: Non-invasive test identifies specific oral bacteria linked to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke, and birth complications, personalizing periodontal treatment.
Metal-Free & Biocompatible Materials
Active service
Zirconia & Ceramic Crowns. Zirconia has become the gold standard in biological dentistry for strength, biocompatibility, reduced leakage, and long-term stability, with zero metal content.
Active service
FD&C Dye Cavity Detection: Food-safe dyes precisely stain diseased tooth structure only, enabling exact removal without sacrificing healthy enamel or dentin.
Technologies we are actively evaluating
In research — not currently offered
Silver Diamine Fluoride: Site-specific chemotherapeutic for deep cavities that kills decay bacteria without fluoride exposure to the body. May reduce root canal rates on asymptomatic teeth.
In research — not currently offered
Infrared Low-Level Laser Therapy: Specific wavelengths convert to cellular chemical energy, encouraging muscle healing, reducing tooth sensitivity, and soothing gum inflammation non-invasively.
The in-research technologies above are being evaluated by Dr. Ebner for future integration. We offer these treatments on a case-by-case basis.
Frequently Asked Questions About Biological Dentistry
Is biological dentistry the same as holistic dentistry?
The terms are often used interchangeably. Both emphasize biocompatible materials and the oral-systemic health connection. At Innovative Dentistry Biltmore, Dr. Ebner integrates biological, holistic, and functional dentistry into one comprehensive approach, each philosophy reinforcing the others.
Does Dr. Ebner remove mercury (amalgam) fillings?
Yes. Dr. Ebner follows the SMART (Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique) protocol, a comprehensive set of safeguards that minimizes mercury vapor exposure during removal, protecting both the patient and the dental team. See the full SMART protocol description above.
What does metal-free dentistry mean?
Metal-free dentistry replaces traditional metal-based fillings, crowns, and implants with ceramic, zirconia, and composite alternatives. These materials are biocompatible, look completely natural, eliminate concerns about metal sensitivity or corrosion, and are the standard at Innovative Dentistry Biltmore for all restorations.
What is functional dentistry and why does it matter?
Functional dentistry addresses how your teeth, bite, jaw joints, muscles, and airway work together as a system. Without functional health as a foundation, cosmetic work can chip and fail, gum disease can worsen despite treatment, and surgical outcomes may not integrate properly. Dr. Ebner evaluates function before recommending any cosmetic, periodontal, or surgical treatment.
Is biological dentistry right for me if I see a conventional dentist now?
Yes. Dr. Ebner welcomes patients transitioning from conventional care who want a biological perspective. She offers second-opinion consultations, reviewing your existing X-rays and treatment plans and providing an honest, whole-health assessment of your options with no obligation to switch your care.
Do you treat patients with autoimmune conditions or metal sensitivities?
Yes. Patients with autoimmune conditions, thyroid disorders, Lyme disease, metal sensitivities, or other systemic health concerns are among those who most benefit from biological dental care. Dr. Ebner works collaboratively with patients' other healthcare providers when appropriate and always uses exclusively biocompatible materials.
Ready to experience dentistry that takes your whole health seriously?
Dr. Ebner's new patient appointments include a whole-body oral health assessment, not just a standard exam. She welcomes patients new to biological dentistry, patients seeking second opinions, and patients transferring from conventional care. No pressure, no judgment.
